Scottish lawyer, Simon Crabb, a member of the Faculty of Advocates, gave a talk on \u2018Challenges of Peace and the Rule of Law\u2019 to an audience in the city of Mzuzu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The programme featured a lecture from Mr Crabb reflecting on the importance of the rule of law, trust and dialogue when peace-building, drawing on his experience of working in conflict-stricken Cambodia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There followed presentations from Moses Mkandawire, Executive Director CSP, and George Mhango, from the Centre for Governance, Peace and Security at Mzuzu University. Their talks focussed on the need for dialogue in the current political impasse in Malawi, and the development of Malawi’s peace architecture, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There was then a time of vibrant discussion with the panelists and invited guests, which featured insightful responses from delegates from Katoto Community Day Secondary School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He was invited to take part in human rights and peace-building activities by the Church and Society Programme<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As well as the Peace Day lecture, Mr Crabb took part in workshops on the international human rights system, gender-based violence, people trafficking and the rights of the child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI was extremely grateful to have the opportunity to learn about the vital work being done by colleagues in Malawi to provide access to justice,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr Linus Malu, the Programme\u2019s Legal Director, said: \u201cScotland and Malawi have a shared history and lawyers have a common interest in promoting and respecting human rights. We have enjoyed working together with Simon and we hope we can have further collaborations with Scottish lawyers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
